Grieving My Daddy While Fighting for My Child: 5 Ways I'm Staying Grounded Through Loss and Co-Parenting

On July 11, 2026, my world became a lot quieter. My daddy passed away, and since that moment, the weight of his absence has been a constant companion.
But as many of you know, life doesn't pause for our grief.
While my heart is navigating the heavy fog of loss, I am also in the middle of an active custody battle. It is a season of extreme opposites: the silence of mourning and the noise of legal papers; the desire to hide under the covers and the necessity of showing up as a fierce, steady advocate for my child.
If you are walking through a season where the world feels like it’s falling apart while you’re trying to keep your family together, please know I see you. I am right there with you in the trenches.
At Heart To Yours Family Life Services, our mission is to help children thrive by strengthening the adults who care for them. Sometimes, "strengthening" doesn't look like having all the answers, it looks like finding the ground beneath your feet when everything else is shaking.
Here are five ways I am staying grounded through this double storm of loss and co-parenting.
1. Embracing the Power of "And"
When life hits hard, we often feel like we have to choose an identity. Are we the grieving daughter or the fighting mother?
The truth is, you are allowed to be both.
I’ve had to tell myself: "I am grieving my daddy, AND I am a capable protector of my child."
Removing the shame of "not being okay" is the first step toward becoming an emotionally safe parent. You don’t have to be perfect to be steady. By acknowledging your pain, you show your children that big emotions are manageable, not something to be feared.
Healing while life is heavy is not about waiting for the storm to pass; it’s about learning to hold your umbrella with a steady hand while the wind blows.
🌿 Aha Moment: Your capacity to feel deep grief is a reflection of your capacity to love deeply. That same love is what fuels your advocacy for your child.
2. Using the 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique

During a custody battle, anxiety can feel like a physical weight. When you add grief to that, it’s easy to feel like you’re floating away from reality.
When I feel the panic rising, whether it’s from a difficult text from a co-parent or a sudden memory of my dad, I use this sensory tool to bring me back to the present moment:
Name 5 things you can see: (The pattern on the rug, the green of a leaf, a photo on the wall).
Name 4 things you can touch: (The texture of your jeans, the cold surface of a desk).
Name 3 things you can hear: (The hum of the fridge, a bird outside, your own breath).
Name 2 things you can smell: (Coffee brewing, the scent of the rain).
Name 1 thing you can taste: (The mint in your mouth or even just the air).
This practice signals to your nervous system that you are safe right now. It moves you from "fight or flight" back into a space where you can make grounded decisions for your family.
If you're struggling with focus, these small steps can help you move from overwhelmed to organized even in the chaos.
3. Setting Radical Boundaries to Protect Your Peace and stay grounded

Grief takes up an enormous amount of mental and emotional energy. Because of this, I have had to be more protective of my energy than ever before.
In a high-conflict custody situation, communication can feel like a series of landmines. To stay grounded, I’ve had to implement strict boundaries:
Timed Communication: I only check co-parenting messages at specific times of the day. I do not let a legal notification ruin my morning tea or my child’s activities.
The "Neutral" Filter: I respond only to facts, not to emotions or accusations. This keeps me steady and prevents me from getting dragged into a cycle of reactivity.
Energy Triage: I ask myself, "Does this require my energy right now, or is this a distraction from my healing?"
Setting boundaries that stick isn't about being "difficult", it's about creating a safe container for your family to heal.
✨ You deserve to have a mind that is a peaceful place to live.
4. Creating Small, Steady Rituals
When everything feels unpredictable, predictability is medicine.
I have leaned into small daily anchors that remind me who I am outside of the grief and the battle.
Honoring my dad by being present with my mom as she grieves.
10-minutes of uninterrupted time to just collect my thoughts.
Reading at least one scripture to maintain my spiritual health through this journey.
These rituals help me move from self-doubt to self-trust. They are tiny promises I keep to myself, proving that I am still in control of my own life, even when the legal system or the waves of grief try to tell me otherwise.
5. Reaching for a Reassuring Hand

Isolation is the enemy of healing. When you are fighting a custody battle, there is often a sense of shame or a desire to "handle it all" to prove you are a fit parent.
But let me tell you the truth: Steady parents are supported parents.
I have had to lean on my village. I have had to be honest about when I am "at capacity."
Removing the shame of needing help allows you to show up for your children with a full cup. Whether it’s a therapist, a coach, or a friend who just sits in the silence with you, you do not have to carry this alone.
We are designed for connection. By strengthening ourselves through community, we create a healthy foundation for our children to thrive.
A Note to Your Heart

I know it's heavy. I know there are days when the "why" feels far away and the "how" feels impossible.
But you are more resilient than the circumstances you are facing. You are the steady ground your child needs, even if your hands are shaking while you hold them.
My dad would have wanted me to keep standing. And I want that for you, too.
If you are feeling lost in the middle of your own storm, please know that Heart To Yours is a safe place for you. We provide the grounded emotional guidance you need to move through these seasons with clarity and confidence.
You are steady. You are capable. You are not alone. 💛
